How Do I Go Corporate?

Everybody at some point in their career had a dream company they wanted to work for or an ambition of starting one’s own business. But paving your path in the crowd where thousands are aspiring for the same thing can be difficult. As Taz said in the ‘Corporate Swag’ episode, “A lot of people find it hard to turn on work tasks and turn off life tasks.”

Today, millions of people want to build a career in corporate roles in different fields from banking to data-driven business analysis. Though corporate jobs have a reputation for not being everyone’s cup of tea, with the right approach, ample gumption, and a little bit of guidance, you can land your dream corporate job in no time.

Are you right for the job?

You might be wandering to enter the corporate world or you might already be a corporate trainee, but it will be easy for you to travel up the ladder if you truly are the right fit for the corporate professionals.

So, introspect if you truly want to choose this field as your career. Here are some pointers that you might want to look out for:

  • You enjoy learning more
  • You are fine with interviews and public speaking
  • You know how to make your path
  • You are a team player and are ready to take responsibility for your work

There are dozens of other qualities that companies usually look for in a corporate trainee candidate.

Everyone starts from the bottom

Entering the corporate world is one thing, making your way up the ladder to your desired position is another. A lot of people don’t want to start from the bottom, but what they fail to understand is that everyone starts from the ground level, and they make their way up by dedication and hard work. You should know how to position yourself in the corporate area. If you can set your foot in the door, then you should be able to get wherever you want to go.

Seizing the Opportunity

For people who want to start their own business, the path doesn’t necessarily need to be crystal clear at first. But you should be able to recognize and seize potential opportunities where you will be able to make the necessary changes. And before just hopping on to the very first opportunity you see, make sure to do some research and be sure that this is what you want.

Another important requirement to be successful in the Corporate world is respect. You can not treat people who are working for you and with you differently. You should be friendly and cordial to people who are putting their efforts into putting the work on your plate. Just treat everybody like you want to be treated. These are the small things that will help you run your business or your part of the job successfully.

What if you are not good at talking?

Not everybody is born to live under the spotlight and that doesn’t mean you cannot have your dream corporate job. The fear of talking to strangers is more common than it appears, medically it is known as glossophobia. There are many ways you can overcome this phobia:

  • By practicing self-care
  • Challenging irrational thoughts
  • Talking where you feel most comfortable

But, if you still can’t get a grip over this fear, you can try getting some professional help. As a candidate who aspires to climb the corporate ladder, you need to be communicable. If you are not comfortable presenting yourself and your skills well in an interview, then you can try temp agencies that can help you practice mock interviews.

Professional boundaries

You need to keep your professional boundaries. Your boss and colleagues just need to know your skills and ability that can help the company grow. Being a social butterfly doesn’t necessarily work in the corporate world, but at the same time, you should be confident enough to put your thoughts and ideas on the table.

Attending meetings at first can be extremely boring everybody gets bored at first. But, what matters is how you work on yourself. If you want to get promotions, you have to focus, and with time you will start enjoying the process. Also, you will have to stop your tongue from slipping because not every word we use casually is workplace-friendly.

Be Mentally Prepared

Most of the people step into corporate with some experience of retails, and more often than not, they end up in puzzling situations. So, while making the jump from retail to corporate one needs to be mentally prepared for what is to come.

In the corporate world, you will end up in situations where you will have to play some office politics, this world will demand you to be a little irreverent. Therefore, you should be mentally ready to deal with situations that do not usually arise in retail.

Being in corporate needs commitment. It is not as easy as it looks, from just paying your bills and managing your budget, you will be responsible for thousands of people whose lives will be affected by your decision. So, being at that level is both incredibly honorable and stressful, with every decision’s aftermath, people working under you will get affected. So, you need to be mentally strong and should be able to make swift and effective decisions if you want to stay in the corporate world.

As Justice from SayWHA radio says, “If this is the job that you want, do realize that there are certain things that will come along that you need to be able to get there. You may fall into a situation where you never have to change anything necessarily about yourself or grow more than what you are right now, you could just fall into it tomorrow.”
